BE LIKE ME

What a laugh what a joke
Acting on a tip you see

The cops came up and stole my smoke
Five of them and one of me

They came on the front porch people
Came in through the back door too
They came to rob my steeple
Take me down and do my due

Up to now I’d suspected people were decent good and kind
The guy that had my house inspected used to be a friend of mine

God pity the sorry bastard
Had enough spite to cause me pain
He’d get where he’s going faster
If he’d keep driving in his own lane
Later on the judge and jury from their smug exalted place
Armed with words of righteous fury condescended to hear my case

They called me a bad example
And a shameful parent to my kids
So the grapes of wrath got trampled
And I didn’t even know what I did

Feeling whipped for no good reason I drove my battered ass back home
Shattered that my neighbor’s treason left my reputation blown

Later on I came to ponder
Why every mindless jerk can ask you
You should be more like me
Why can’t you be like me?

Life’s most miserable mystery
Why don’t you be like me ?
Why can’t you be like me ?
