Five Tassie Stories

Tracklist
  1. The Tasmanian Song.
  2. This is a song about our lovely island, with recollections of places visited by the singers, and includes reflections of home.
  3. The Derby Flood of 1929
In the year of 1929 after continuous heavy rain, the township of Derby in the North East was devastated by a 40 metre high wall of water which arose from the failure of the newly built Briseis Dam. This song is in a contemporary style and tells some of that story.
  4. The Brier Holme
On the 21* of July in 1904, a tall ship sailed from London bound for Tasmania. Approximately 5 months later this ship was wrecked off the West Coast of Tasmania, all hands were lost, with the exception of one crewman. This surviving sailor, Oscar Larsen, was found alive by fisherman almost 3 months after the sinking. The song is somewhat in the style of a sea shanty, and has been written because it was thought that the story deserved at least to be remembered in song.
  5. The Mount Lyall Mine Disaster
Tasmania, and particularly the West Coast, have strong associations with mining. Mining has been the catalyst in the building of many thriving townships and communities. At times the dividends from mining have come at a terrible cost of human life. This song tries to paint a picture of one particularly tragic event in Tasmania’s mining history that occurred 1912.
  6. The Western Tiers Song
The Western Tiers (or more correctly the Great Western Tiers) has been a dominant feature in Tasmania’s landscape in both ancient and contemporary times. This song arose from a wish to present in some small way an image of this magnificent entity. The theme is reflective and the mood is gentle and almost merry.
