Put it down to youthful exuberance (some would say there must have been chemical assistance involved) but Ronnie wrote a song about Old Red Wall and the Wall family, whose life goal was to survive going over Niagara Falls in a barrel.
Olcott, where we practiced is a stone’s throw from the Falls so the feat naturally crept into our thinking processes. To complete this preface Nabisco Shredded Wheat has their main offices in Niagara Falls. We imagined on a day of those days if we could pull it off and concocted a plan to run the Falls in a gigantic shredded wheat vessel which would look like the Nabisco product on the outside but would cushion us from a certain and watery death by means of a rubber capsule, sort of like a very strong tennis ball.
We contacted Nabisco and they seemed very keen on the idea and were willing to underwrite the project but unfortunately they had a legal team with more sense that any of us had at the time and another wonderfull project never saw the light of day through an unwarranted excess of caution and outright fear. Bloody lawyers. Still I wonder….
